I’ve emailed Council again

Yes! another email to Council of the City of Gold Coast – How ridiculous is that title, missing the word THE twice highlights how misjudged their public interaction really is. Here’s my latest email to the CEO Tim Baker.

Dear Mr Baker, as a retired gent with plenty of time on my hands and being an avid consumer of news, many Facebook group posts and viewer of YouTube meetings (full Council and Committee), I wish to provide some observations and/or recommendations.

The community seems to have no idea at all of why Council makes the decisions it does, or the reasoning behind the laws it enforces. This ignorance more often than not results in angry, violent language in online comments and directed at Councillors. Much of which can be mitigated with clear communication.

Can I suggest that a full-time media representative be engaged to explain issues that the media fails to detail correctly? Someone who can clearly and successfully elaborate on the reasoning behind Council actions. For example, the recent fake grass and paving stones removal request, which featured on local TV news, newspaper and the Brisbane 18.00 News bulletins.

The Mayor or local Councillors do not appear to have the skills required to manage the Council’s media presence.

The City Plan and how it’s applied to development applications triggers far too much confusion and anger. Council could consider creating a simple, plain language explanation, information sheet, web page, and social media posts. The height limit confusion was shared by new Councillors on their arrival, let alone the layperson living in Palm Beach.

Clear explanation of the reasons for parking regulations, meters and signage, dog registration, all Local Laws, explanations of littering and illegal dumping laws, WRC Gate Fees, what is the Council’s responsibility, and what is not.

Finally, please have someone teach those speaking in the Chamber how to use the microphone, not swallowing it, or bending over when it’s not necessary, failing to turn it on or off, and please have it pointing at the face. Also, no clapping in front of the microphone when talking, or eating when it’s left on, and please ensure that any presentation slides are broadcast as they are presented.

Many thanks
